自2007年起，已有数名伊朗的核物理学家遭遇暗杀，其中2010年—2012年即有4位核物理学家被暗杀身亡，手法包括枪手枪击与汽车炸弹等[1][2][3] 。伊朗政府指控以色列为幕后凶手，目的为阻碍伊朗核计划[1]，并于2011年与2012年逮捕了数名被控与摩萨德（以色列情报机构）合作的国民。部分西方媒体也指以色列与这些暗杀事件有关[4][5][6]。对于这些指控，以色列国防部长摩西·亚阿隆表示“我们会采取一切手段阻止伊朗取得核武，虽希望透过制裁（英语：International sanctions against Iran）的手段即可达成，但最终以色列仍必须自卫[7]。”

暗杀伊朗核物理学家的计划据称已于2013年在美国压力下终止[8][9]。美国国家广播公司报导指有两名美国官员表示以色列资助、训练并武装反伊朗政府的伊朗人民圣战者组织（MEK）成员以执行暗杀任务[10]，但也有官员否认此说法[11][12]。2020年又有一名伊朗核物理学家被以色列暗杀[13][14]。
