M-256是苏联海军的615型（北约代号：“魁北克级”）短程柴油攻击型潜舰，被编入波罗的海舰队。1957年9月26日，在波罗的海芬兰湾的烈风条件下航行时，M-256的一台柴油发动机发生爆炸。火势立即吞噬了柴油舱，并很快蔓延到下一个舱室。潜舰浮出水面，由于可能发生进一步爆炸，所有船员疏散到甲板上。火灾开始大约四个小时后，船身突然失去了纵向稳定性，随即沉没。在船甲板上的35人中，只有7人获救。
