日鳽总目(学名:Eurypygimorphae 或 Phaethontimorphae)这个演化支包括鹲形目(热带鸟)和日鳽目(鹭鹤和日鳽),是透过基因组分析从旧用法重新定义。[1] 在2013年,Yuri et al.首先根据核基因分辨出它们的分类关系。[2] 以往分类学家把热带鸟归在鹈形目,鹭鹤和日鳽则归在鹤形目,某些遗传分析会把日鳽类分到一个有争议、奇怪的演化支Metaves,并摆放在不确定的地位。[3][4]晚近的分子生物研究则把它们归类成日鳽总目,与水鸟类成为鹭形类底下的姊妹群。[1][5][6]
