English: The USS Macon was one of the U.S. Navy's Akron-class rigid airships constructed in the early 1930s. Its first flight was on April 12, 1933, just days after its sister ship, the Akron was lost in a deadly crash. The Macon departed from the East Coast to her home base at what is now Moffett Field near Mountain View, California, on October 12, 1933. In this photo, the Macon is being moved into Hangar One at Moffett Field in 1933, a prominent landmark that can still be seen adjacent to NASA's Ames Research Center.
On February 12, 1935, the USS Macon was lost during a storm, setting into the Pacific Ocean off Point Sur, California. All but two of its crewmen survived the crash. Photo number: ARC-1933-A91-0261-15 Date taken: 1933 |
